Batea

My grandfather Llorens was born in Batea (Terra Alta, Tarragona). Batea is located on a hill (376m) on the west side of the Terra Alta county.

The town covers 128 square kilometers and it is crossed by several valleys: the Voravall valley, the Algars river and the Major valley that is the real backbone of the town, where most of the agricultural land is located.

History:

Some historians have identified Batea as the location of the ancient city of Ilercavonia (mentioned by Ptolomeus), also known as "Adeba". According to the historian Pare faci, "adeba" meant boat, and Batea resembles a big boat, the bow of which is the place where the two valleys meet.

The Torre Madrina archeological site (8th to 7th century B.C.) is the first verified proof of population on that area. there is also and Iberian village from the 7th century B.C.

Near Benufets there is the remains of a village with signs of Greek, Phoenician and Roman inhabitants.
